Hundreds of Fort Bend ISD students will attend different schools in the coming years after trustees approved new middle and high school attendance boundaries.
The Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved High School Boundary Scenario 1, choosing the option that moves fewer students while rejecting a more sweeping proposal recommended by the superintendent to further relieve crowding at Elkins High School.
Under the approved plan, 473 students will eventually move from Elkins High School to Clements High School. Students from the Quail Valley area will continue feeding into Elkins.
District officials say the boundary changes are intended to relieve overutilization at Austin, Elkins and Travis high schools while also improving feeder-pattern alignment.
Trustees rejected High School Boundary Scenario 2, which would have made broader changes and moved more students in an effort to address enrollment and capacity concerns, particularly at Elkins.
The board also approved new middle school boundaries in a 6-1 vote.
The decision followed months of data analysis and community feedback, according to Fort Bend ISD. Several parents addressed trustees before the vote, urging the district to consider the long-term impact boundary changes could have on students and families.
“I understand that there is no perfect solution and the district has to balance enrollment, capacity facilities, and the needs of many communities,” one parent told trustees. “However, I believe the long-term stability of our students and families should be an important part of that decision.”
Another speaker called on the district to slow down the process.
“Go back to the drawing board, pause this rush process, account for true data, current migration factors, and collaborate on a transparent community-led solution that actually represents families,” the speaker said.
Families will not see the changes immediately. The new attendance boundaries are scheduled to take effect beginning with the 2027-28 school year.
Fort Bend ISD says it will work with affected schools and families ahead of the transition. Additional information about timelines and campus support plans is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
Families can also use a feature on Fort Bend ISD’s website that allows them to enter their home address to determine whether they are affected by the new boundaries and what changes could apply to their students.
