Catholics around the world are praying for Pope Leo XIV after the Vatican announced the 71-year-old pontiff has lung cancer and underwent surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. Here in Houston, members of the city’s oldest Catholic church are gathering in solidarity.
Church of the Annunciation in downtown Houston is where concern for Pope Leo is bringing parishioners together.
The Vatican confirmed the diagnosis and surgery, saying the cancer was caught early.
Father Paul Felix, pastor at the Church of the Annunciation, says the news was met with deep concern throughout the parish.
“We have concern, respect, love and affection for him, and so we of course want to know as much as we can know so that we know what to pray for, for his well-being,” Felix said.
Archbishop Joe S. Vasquez shared a statement on behalf of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, encouraging prayers from Catholics across the globe.
“I offer prayers of thanksgiving to God for the successful removal of a pulmonary nodule from Pope Leo XIV and express my gratitude for the care provided by his medical team,” Vasquez said.
Father Felix says the moment is also a reminder to pray for all people battling cancer, not just the Pope. He says the outpouring of support reflects how deeply Catholics feel connected to the leader of their faith.
“He is our spiritual father. He’s a Vicar of Christ on Earth and the successor to Saint Peter. And his role is very much one of being one who unites us in the faith,” Felix said.
Anyone in the Houston community is welcome to join Wednesday’s prayer services at Annunciation Catholic Church in downtown Houston.
