(KRON) -- A suspect was killed in South San Jose after brandishing a firearm at police, authorities said Monday morning.

The incident occurred just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the 3000 block of Locke Drive, east of the Andrew P. Hill High School sports fields. “The suspect brandished a firearm at officers,” the San Jose Police Department wrote. “Officers then discharged their firearms at the suspect.”

The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. San Jose PD later identified the suspect as 69-year-old Ted Lieu.

According to police, officers responded at 8:13 p.m. to a report of a weapons disturbance. The reporting party told police she was in an altercation with her landlord who was armed. She also told police the landlord assaulted a second person.

Officers arrived on the scene and determined that the suspect had not brandished a firearm. The reporting party declined to press charges. A short while later, at around 9:32 p.m., the same reporting party called 911 and reported that the landlord brandished a firearm at her and a second roommate, while holding them against their will inside the residence.

Returning to the scene, officers determined that assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and possible kidnapping had occurred. The suspect, identified as Lieu, fled the scene before police got there.

Officers safely extricated victims from the residence and began scouring the area searching for Lieu. Officers obtained information indicating he was hiding at a residence in the 3100 block of Locke Drive, a few houses away.

At around 11:13 a.m., officers searching for Lieu found him hiding in a shed outside the residence. Based on a preliminary investigation, SJPD said Lieu fired at least once at officers before officers returned fire.

Lieu was struck at least once and was pronounced deceased. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

An assault rifle was also found at Lieu's residence. No officers were injured in the incident. SJPD said it was the third shooting involving an officer in San Jose this ear.

The incident is being investigated by the SJPD Homicide Unit and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. It is also being reviewed by the SJPD Internal Affairs unit, the City Attorney's Office, and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor.
